Talking to Turtles, 18th of May, Knust - Splits & Pieces 2016

Talking to Turtles is a german Band formed in 2007 in Rostock, consisting of Claudia Göhler and Florian Sievers. By now they have released four albums and have played several headlinig shows and festivals here in Germany. On Wednesday the 18th of May I had gotten the chance to see them on their Splits & Pieces Tour 2016.

I haven't known Talking To Turtles for a long time, to be honest. It was a casual day and I was just exploring new bands and music when I suddenly found Talking To Turtles. I listened to their latest album Split before I found out they were gonna play in Hamburg only a week later. So I messaged the organizor and asked for a press ticket since I didn't have any money to afford a ticket.

A few days later I asked the Band if they would like to play on a beneficial concert in summer, I'm organizing right now. It only took them a few hours until I got an answer from them saying that they would love to come but that they sadly don't play any shows anymore this year after July. The concert will be in September. As an compensation they told me, they would put me on the guest list for their concert in Hamburg, if I wanted to. I immediately replied and was more than just happy and thankful for what they did there for me.

Talking To Turtles in Hamburg - May 18th 2016

My friend Carly decided to come with me since I prefer sharing such moments with other people. So we went to the venue together which we reached at about 8:45pm, 15 minutes before the concert was supposed to start. We went in and I told the guy who checked the tickets that I was on the guest list of the Band, when he told me that he didn't find my name. That's when I became nervous. I only had 15 more minutes to reach the Band and ask them under what name they put me on the guest list. Gladly they replied only 5 minutes later so when I went back inside I got in and my friend with me.

The venue isn't really big and about 500 people fit in there. Everyone slowly went inside when we did. Their was no certain age in the crowd as there were people who were around my age but also people around my mothers age, what made the whole feeling inside the venue more calm because you didn't have to deal with crazy fangirls fighting over spots in the crowd. The venue filled and when the supporting act Burkini Beach came on stage the room was filled with people.

Burkini Beach is a Band of three guys playing indie rock music. They were also from Germany what made the whole talking on stage thing a little bit easier. Their music was really chilled and something I would continue listening to. During one song they were also supported by Claudia from Talking To Turtles.

After Burkini Beach was done it was time for the headlining act - Talking To Turtles. While the crew rebuilt the stage, Carly and I decided to sit down in front of the stage and just talk until the concert starts. What we did. So around 10pm we got up and shortly after, the concert started. The Band came on stage with one drummer and one bassist to support them on stage. The whole crowd was just enjoying the music and the Band seemed to be really shy but open minded as they were talking a lot to the crowd but often didn't really know what to say so they just stuttered something with a small smirk on their faces.

They played old and new songs and told us stories about a few songs and how they were writing them together a few years back in their apartment. Even though the stage was really small, they put on a really good show. between Florian who played the guitar and sang and Claudia who played the keyboard and also sang, was a little lamp which went on whenever they sang a song. It spread a cool vibe as I had never seen something similar on stage before.

The Band themselves seemed to really enjoy they show as they told us that in Hamburg they were always being welcomed really happily and open. They enjoyed the whole athmosphere of the small venue and the crowd together with their music. It all seemed to be one and there was no pushing or anything. It was all about the music and just having fun.

Talking To Turtles played for a little more than an hour before they came back on stage to play an encore of two more songs. For one song Claudia and Florian, who were by then on stage without the drummer and the bassist, both went to the front of the stage to a single microphone through which they were singing together. It sounded really beautiful as no one played an instrument and it was just their two voices filling the venue with warmth.

After the concert I was really impressed by the whole show. I didn't really know them that well and actually mostly knew songs off their latest album but that didn't matter. What mattered was that the concert was a mix of good vibes, music and a lot of fun. I would definitely go see them again when they come back!

Next up is Fischer-Z on Tuesday and AC/DC on Thursday!
