fallingforyou - The 1975 in Hamburg & Berlin

The 1975 is an alternative rock band from Wilmslow, Cheshire, close to Manchester (UK).The Band consists of Matty Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald and George Daniel. I have been listening to The 1975 for about 3 years now but I've sadly never gotten the chance to go to one of their concerts  because I have always been abroad when they were touring in Europe. But now I finally got my chance to see them - twice!

"I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it" is the name of their second record, they are touring all over Europe and soon North America with right now. I have been listening to it since the day it came out, making my excitement to see them in Hamburg on the 2nd of April grow with each day that passed by.

Saturday, April 2nd 2016 - The 1975 in Hamburg

4am - my alarm went off and I crawled out of my bed, my eyes still closed and my dark circles hanging down to my knees. I was tired, when I got up. I brushed my teeth, washed my face, got dressed, packed my bag and prepared my food while I was asking myself why I'm doing this all over again. I got ready to sit in front of the venue the whole day just to enjoy a concert of 1 hour and 45 minutes in the first row.

After getting ready I went to catch the train to meet up with a friend at the venue at 6:30am. But I missed my train so I arrived around 7am, with a bag filled with food, a blanket and a bag with the ususal stuff - purse, keys, water, etc. I arrived at the venue and there were already around 20 girls sitting in front of the doors wrapped up in blankets and warm clothes. I luckily didn't feel that cold yet. I looked for my friend and when I found her I sat down with her and her friends from Poland who were going to all three The 1975 concerts in Germany. Slowly more and more people arrived and by 8am a queue had started to build up and another friend I met at The NBHD in Hamburg and Frankfurt surprisingly arrived.

Around 10am the security told us to get away from the doors so they could already start building up the barriers in front of the entrance, so we all went away from the doors and the chaos began. People started fighting about places and who would row up in the front row and in the rows behind. I didn't want to get involved in all the drama so I just sat down in the second row with my blanket and didn't bother about anything. As people finally calmed down everyone sat down and everyone started to make friends and so did we and ended up being a group of 6 german girls by lunch.

As the time passed by it started to get warmer and we were able to sit on the blanket and take off our warm sweaters and sit in the sun in T-Shirts. Music was blasting from everywhere around us and by 1pm we were about 100 people. A breeze of fresh air was going through my hair and for a few hours it felt like summer, as I was drinking my white wine and just enjoying the weather with a few friends. In fact the weather made me forget about the concert for a moment and time pass by a lot faster than on the underwatour where I spend most of the days freezing.

After waiting for about 8 hours the Security came to us and drew an X and a number on the hands of each person who had been waiting since the morning, so we would be able to get in first.

5:30pm - let the games begin. The doors were opened and all the teenage girls in the back immediately came pushing from the back because they wanted to get in first. The X's on our hands didn't matter in that moment as everyone behind me was reckless. So we were pushed inside the venue and as I went in, screaming 14 year olds ran by me inside the venue while I was just slowly walking inside, because running can get you kicked out. I entered the venue, walked down the stairs and as I went into the hall my friends were keeping a place for me in the front row. I went up to them and was happy all the stress was finally over and I was only 1 1/2 hour away from seeing The 1975 for the first time after years.

The support act named The Japanese House came on stage at 7pm and put off a simple but amazing show. Their music is really calm and the lead singer spreat a really chilled vibe as she came on stage without any make up and wearing boyfriend jeans, smirking at the crowd and a sweater. Her voice was really soft and I could've listened to it for more than just half an hour.

8pm - the lights went off and the crowd filled with teenage girls went crazy as the Band came on stage. They started with "Love Me" a song off their second record and finished with "Girls" off their first album  (The 1975) before they came back to  play another four songs. Their show was packed with a lot of good vibes and an amazing lightening show as they had almost a different lightening for each song.

The 9th Song of the in total 22 Songs they played that day was "Me", my absolute favorite song of The 1975. The music of the song they played before stopped and the lights went on as Matty, who already drank a little too much of his wine, started talking, absolute nonesense no one of me and my friends understood. It was quite entertaining. As he kept talking his message bacame a little bit clearer; he wanted the crowd to put down their phones and just enjoy the moment. He wanted it to be "Just us and you" like he said. "I promise you, you will remember these five minutes better than when you're filming them." were his last words as the crowd started cheering and the band started playing with an orange kinda red lightening in the back. I barley have my phone out anyways at  concerts so I just closed my eyes and enjoyed my favorite song.

The rest of the show was a mix of calm music to chill and party songs to jump up and down to -  especially when they played The Sound and everyone started jumping for full 4 minutes. They finished off with Sex and by then I had already decided to buy a ticket for their show in Berlin 6 days later.

After the concert had finished I didn't even bother waiting for the band at their tour bus as I was sick and there were about 300 people waiting anyways. So I brought my friend to the central station before I went home and got a good sleep.

Friday, 8th of April 2016 - The 1975 in Berlin

12am - my alarm went off and I again crawled out of my bed with my dark circles hanging down to my feet. I had gotten a total of three hours of sleep. I brushed my teeth, put on my clothes, washed my face and prepared my food all over again. My bus would leave at 3am and since there were no trains leaving anymore because it was during the week I had to take the night bus at 2am. I surprisingly wasn't feeling cold when I went outside, so I was already looking kinda forward to sitting in front of the venue with one of my friends I had met at the underwatour and with whom I also went to see The 1975 in Hamburg.

I arrived at the venue in Berlin around 7:15am and on my way there I met a girl I met at The NBHD in November 2015. So we waited for my friend Rebekka together who'd arrive about 10 minutes after us. When we arrived there were again about 25 people sitting in front of the doors - also the polish girls I met in Hamburg. The atmosphere was kinda harsh and nobody talked to each other and people would already give each other death looks. I was kinda afraid of what would await me when  they let us in.

After about 3 hours of waiting a memeber of the crew came with pink paper bands for the first 50 people at the venue. He told us that with those wristbands we would get in earlier than everyone else and that we could also leave the venue for a few hours and come back later and just go in. That made me  a little bit more calm about going in later that day.

Time passed by and the sund became hotter and hotter and the waiting actually started to get really hard because we were sitting right in the spot of the sun. I was afraid my diabetes would collapse so I went to sit somewhere else in the shadows to cool down a little.

A few hours later Rebekka and I decided to go to the toilet and as we came back all the girls had moved from the doors and stairs to the floor in front of the stairs and doors of the venue. We got our stuff and looked for a place in the first row since we had wristbands to go in first, but eventually everyone without a wristband sat in the first row and didn't want to let us in front of them because "we would get in first anyways", so we had to find a place where we were kinda in the front and where it wouldn't take us to walk through the mass of people without a wristband to get in.

Around 6:30am the security guy asked for the people with the wristbands and got us up the stairs and in front of the doors where we had to row up in the order of how we arrived. It took the teenage girls a lot of time to realize they shouln't fight about their spot and just line up in order to get in, so about ten minutes later we were finally able to go inside. We again got a spot in the first row and started waiting. The air was warm and it slowly got harder for me to breathe. I was still feeling weak because of the weather swings and my diabetes, including the air in the venue, so I felt dizzy and had to go out to the ambulance to get my blood glucose checked. Luckily the support act wasn't on stage yet so it was easy for me to go out. I went to the back entrance and sat down in the ambulance where I would check my blood glucose and talk to the people outside. Everything was good and I just had to drink some water and after 10 minutes, right when the support act came on stage, I was able to go back to the first row and enjoy the concert.

The Japanese House put on a good show again and their calm music helped me with getting better since I didn't move too much so my body was able to calm down and feel good again.

The 1975 came on stage at 8:30pm and everyone was cheering. It was Matty's 27th birthday so he was in an extra good mood as we held up Happy Birthday signs during the second song and throwing balloons through the venue since the beginning of the concert. Someone gave him a Happy Birhtday hat he put on for a few minutes while he was dancing and thanking us for coming to the show "on the best day of the year" as he called it.

The Band put on an amazing show again and the crowd was in a really good mood even though no one got along with one and another. I started to feel better and better during the show and at the end I was finally able to really dance and go absolutely crazy to songs like The Sound and Sex. I had the time of my life during the concert and I was more than happy that I had decided to see them again before seeing them on the festivals this summer.

After the show Rebekka and I went outside and sat down for a short moment before we decided to leave, since I also had to catch my bus back to Hamburg at 1am. I left and reached the central bus station around 12am. I got on the bus and fell asleep immediately, since I was finally feeling warm and comfortable but still a little weak from the concert and almost passing out.

All in all I gotta say that I had an absolute blast at both of these concert. The 1975 put on two amazing shows with a lot of entertainment. They gave their best to make the crowd feel good and didn't fail their mission. I can't wait to see them again this summer, but first I got a bunch of other concerts to go to the next few months.
